Do it yourself with Arch Linux

arch-fi

Arch Linux is an operating system that targets competent Linux users (or those who are willing to learn) by giving you complete control and responsibility over your own system with a “do it yourself” approach. By the very nature of this approach it can be tricky to install but the comprehensive Arch Wiki beginners guide is on hand to guide you through the process. Having gone through this process many times there is a big sense of personal achievement and satisfaction when done successfully.

Once you are over the installation hurdle Arch Linux is one of the most user friendly desktop operating systems to use and maintain. The time spent during the tricky installation process can be time well spent.

Arch-Linux is generally considered beyond the reach of those who lack the technical expertise or persistence required to use it. There are Arch-based alternatives like Antergos or Manjaro that provide many of the benefits however with a bigger focus on user-friendliness and accessibility. Both do deviate from the Arch “do it yourself” philosophy because of their simple GUI installers. They also facilitate a variety of desktop environments as well as common applications and configurations. The outcome is a complete preconfigured installation with the desktop environment of your choice and access to the vast Arch software repositories.
